I read the book “Who Moved My Cheese” a few years ago after it was recommended to me as a way to deal with change. I loved it and dug it out again when I was feeling overwhelmed by the thought of a change in my usual routine. If you haven’t read it then I do highly recommend it. It’s a very quick read (30ish mins) if you power through. You can apply the concept to any aspect of your life that you feel resistant to changing.
In this blog, however, I’m applying that change specifically to movement.
August can be a tricky time of year for movement routines. Many of us have holidays planned, kids at home or just generally want to enjoy the last month of summer and prioritise other fun things.
Here is my reminder: move with the cheese (change of routine) and don’t be afraid to find new cheese (new routine). You might even find that you really enjoy the new cheese!
This is your opportunity to do things you wouldn’t necessarily do normally. If you’re on holiday, maybe you fancy going for a run or long walk to explore your new area. If you’re by the pool or sea, why not embrace swimming as your refreshing form of movement? If you’re still in your usual environment but feeling overwhelmed with summer plans or have kids to entertain, you could commit to 5-10 minute bursts of movement (whichever kind you choose) throughout the day instead. No movement is right or wrong, do what works for you with the time and resources available.
Happy August and here’s to moving with the cheese!
